Snakes and the Eco-System

12/23/2011

I just finished watching the show, "Exploring North Carolina". One of the subjects that they talked about was wild snakes. When outside hiking, fishing, birdwatching or all above, please respect these creatures that are part of the eco-system. Even in your yard, they are part of the ecosystem. When attracting birds, you will most likely attract their predator like raptors or snakes. Be mindful of where these predator will hide to catch birds. One of these places is black berry bushes, or other areas that are near where birds eat. Make sure that you do not get near these sites since they will strike. Treat all snakes as poisonous because they all carry bacteria in their mouths. Make sure to respect these animals too.

January 10, 2011-Winter Storm:

My dad placed food in the bird feeders today down in Pelzer, SC. While he was doing this, the birds were flocking around him. The snow has made them desperate for food.

January 25, 2011-Winter Storm in Western North Carolina

Since there has been heavey snow in Western North Carolina Mountains, we have seen several bird from the Alpine Forest of Pisgah National Forest. We have seen a Canada Warbler and a Golden Eagle in Taylors, SC in the past week.

May 21-31, 2011-Migration of Birds

There has been quite a number of migratory birds in the Pelzer area these past weeks. My Aunt had a Darkeye Junco fall from the ski because of exhasesion. I have seen more birds that have not been on my life lists this week. Also, at Pisgah National Forest, there has been several butterflys that have been migrating in the National Forest. The birds are starting to nest on their second time around. This weekend, the Golden Eagle should be nesting up at Devil's Courthouse. (See Pisgah National Forest Park on my website.)
